How Accurate Are Flight Tracking Maps?

By Tim · 21 April 2026

Flight tracking maps can be impressively accurate, but coverage, signal quality, and data availability all matter.

Flight tracking Route accuracy Flight data

The short answer

Flight tracking maps are often very accurate for modern commercial flights, especially where aircraft position signals are received clearly and consistently. They can show the shape of a route, the aircraft's progress, and the path taken during departure and arrival.

That said, no public flight tracking map should be treated as perfect in every situation. Accuracy depends on the aircraft, the data source, receiver coverage, timing, and whether the route data is complete.

What can affect accuracy

Coverage is one of the biggest factors. Over land, there may be many receivers listening for aircraft signals. Over oceans, remote areas, or places with fewer receivers, tracking can be less continuous.

Some systems also combine different sources of data. This can be very useful, but it means the map you see may include interpolated positions, delayed points, or gaps where the aircraft was not directly observed.

Why this still works for route artwork

For a custom flight path print, the goal is to capture the route and character of the journey in a truthful way. A route does not need every second of data to show the meaningful shape of the flight.

Where enough data is available, the result can be far more personal than a straight line between airports because it reflects the path the aircraft actually took.

Why we are careful with unavailable flights

If a flight cannot be found or the data is not good enough, it is better to be honest than to invent a route. The value of a Stories Mapped print comes from the connection to a real journey.

That is why route availability matters. When the data supports it, the artwork can become a genuine record of a journey rather than a decorative guess.
